Lalibela is a small town in northern Ethiopia that is famous for its 11 monolithic rock-cut churches from the 13th century which are built by king Lalibela. They are sometimes regarded as one the 8th wonder of the world and they are part of the UNESCO's world heritage site. The world churches are divided in two groups, the northern and the southern cluster separated by a small stream called the Jordan river. A detail of the Bet Medhame Alem church, which is the largest monolithic rock-hewn church in the world, it is 11.5m high and covers an area of about 800 square meters.
