37km northwest of Arba Minch lies Chencha with its many Dorze villages. It is cold at 2900 meters, but the soil is very suitable for agriculture and in the past impressive terraces are constructed. The Dorze’s traditional houses are unique, broader and much higher than the huts of other tribes. They resemble a giant bamboo braided beehive. The Dorze are also excellent weavers, their finely woven shawls are famous throughout Ethiopia.
