The mantled howler (alouatta palliata), or golden-mantled howling monkey is one of the largest Central American monkeys, and males can weigh up to 9.8 kg. They live in wooded areas such as mangroves and rainforests. These monkeys spends the majority of each day resting and sleeping. Males have an enlarged hyoid bone near the vocal cords and this is used to amplify the howler's calls, allowing it to locate other males without expending much energy.
