The resplendent quetzal (pharomachrus mocinno) is a bird in the trogon family which lives in the cloud forest of Costa Rica. This immensely coloured bird is widely considered to be the most beautiful bird of Central America and it also played an important role in Mesoamerican mythologies. The quetzal has a green/blue-violet body and red breast and a very long tail with one or two feathers. The male has a helmet-like crest. We went to San Gerardo de Dota to spot this fantastic bird and together with a experienced naturalist we discovered 6 quetzals.
