The scintillant hummingbird (selasphorus scintilla) is one of the smallest hummingbirds (6-8cm) which can be found in the mountains of Costa Rica. Hummingbirds have a very high metabolism and they drink nector, taken from a variety of small flowers. They hover in mid-air at rapid wing flapping rates, typically around 50 times per second, but possibly as high as 200 times per second. They have long small bills and drink with their tongue.
