Cambodia, a Buddhist country situated between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, has 13 million inhabitants. The Mekong river flows from Laos in the North to Vietnam in the Southeast. Centrally in the lowland plains, the Tonlé Sap lake is situated.
In 1953 Cambodia gained independancy from French rule. This was followed by turbulent decades of the Vietnam war and the bloody regime of the Khmer Rouge. Now there is again stability and tourism is slowly flourishing.
