In May 2018, I went back to Ethiopia with my wife Heleen and 2 friends. This time we explored the national park of Bale Mountains. First we travelled through the Rift Valley with its 6 lakes and we enjoyed the many birds, thousands of flamingos, monkeys, hippos and endangered Swayne hartebeests.
The national park Bale Mountains consists of 3 completely different landscapes with many endemic animal and plant species. In the Dinsho region we could spot the impressive mountain nyala and the Menelik bushbuck. The heart of the national park is formed by the famous Sanetti Plateau. On these wild highlands at an altitude of 3000 to 4000 meters we could observe and photograph the world's rarest canid and Africa's most endangered carnivore; the Ethiopian wolf. Then we descended to the Harenna forest; a moist, subtropical and extremely dense forest. There we could observe the shy Bale Mountains vervet, discover a rare chameleon and we also encountered some giant forest hogs.
In Debre Zeit/Bishoftu I photographed many colorful birds and we end our trip with a visit to the impressive Jemme River Gorge where the beautiful and unique gelada baboons live.
